In 2015, we left Los Angeles and headed to North Carolina. We had decided we wanted to purchase a home with about 10 acres. As we were looking for property, we came across a family farm with 60 acres within our budget. We thought it was too much land and kept looking, but we didn’t find anything we liked, and that 60 acre farm just felt right. We ended up buying it and started researching different livestock. Within our research, we also started learning more about sustainability. That’s when Ryan remembered an idea his grandfather had when Ryan was much younger – ostriches. We began doing our research on not only sustainability, but the health benefits of ostrich meat. We visited a nearby farm to learn more, and we loved it. We spent the next 6 months learning everything from fencing to feeding. After that 6 month period, we got our first pair of ostriches. We are very excited to share everything we’ve learned about ostrich meat with as many people as possible and show them there is a healthier alternative to red meat.

For more than a thousand years, Indians lived an agricultural life on the lands that became known as North Carolina. About the 11th century A.D., a new cultural tradition emerged in the Pee Dee River Valley. That new culture, called ‘’Pee Dee’’ by archaeologists, was part of a widespread tradition known as ‘’South Appalachian Mississippian.’’ Throughout Georgia, South Carolina, eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina, and the southern North Carolina Piedmont, the new culture gave rise to complex societies. These inhabitants built earthen mounds for their spiritual and political leaders, engaged in widespread trade, supported craft specialists, and celebrated a new kind of religion. Town Creek, situated on Little River (a tributary of the Great Pee Dee in central North Carolina), has been the focus of a consistent program of archaeological research under one director for more than half a century.

Given Memorial Library and Tufts Archives
From its earliest days, the Village of Pinehurst has had a lending library. For nearly seventy years, the library was provided through the benevolence and good will of the Tufts family. The location and number of volumes varied season by season, and in 1963-1964, the library had dwindled to a few shelves, and was located in the Casino building. Then, at the urging of Eric Nelson, Sarah Given Larson was moved to create a lasting treasure in honor and memory of her parents, John L. and Irene Heinz Given. With her endowment, and a gift of land on the Village Green by Richard S. Tufts, the Given Memorial Library was born. Ten years later, the Tufts Archives was created through an endowment from the Tufts Family Foundation and another gift of land, both engineered by Richard S. Tufts. The Pinehurst history museum was added to the library building. Now the Given Memorial Library is decades-old, and is a central and beloved part of the Village, and the Tufts Archives is known throughout the world for the quality and uniqueness of the collection.
The Village of Pinehurst took ownership of the management of the Given Memorial Library and Tufts Archives in April 2022.
